According to Reddit discussion thread, the tattoo was intended to be:

"I stand for many yet walk alone."

However, it is a pretty horrendous translation fail.

My fellow linguaphile, Alan Siegrist adds, 

The peculiar thing is that the characters are all correctly and properly written in a nice font, but it is completely gibberish in meaning. Could it possibly have been machine-translated into Japanese from English or some other language and the MT output tattooed as-is onto the unsuspecting tattooee’s foot? You would think that maybe the untranslated lowercase letter “i” in the supposedly Japanese MT output would have clued someone in to the fact that the MT had failed, leaving just gibberish.

It reads:

のiスタンドの多く No i-sutando no ooku

まだ私は独りで歩ける。 Mada watashi ha hitori de arukeru.

The first line makes no sense but might mean something along the lines of:

“Many of i-stand of”

The second line is not so bad, translating to :

“I can still walk alone.”


This reminds me of Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

An idea... (or: Economous Musgrove Chapter 1 Part 1)

I just had a crazy thought: I have an m/s that has not gone anywhere for a long while so perhaps I could share it with you all 500? 1000? words at a time. Perhaps feedback might get it moving? Still here! Still here!

Just in case you thought I had shuffled off somewhere, I am still about, honest, being very preoccupied about editing (actually a major rewrite - you should see all the green pen scribbled over each page, the inserted pages with even more green scribblings) and slack about blogging. I heard once that you need to post at least once a week to be considered a real blog, so I don't know where that leaves us... Just thought I would acknowledge that "clede" (a corruption of Mr Hranac's 'cledu' verificon word) meaning a country dance, and most likely "verger" (coined by Alyosha's daughter) meaning a builder of fortifications, might well have a place in the Half-Continent. 'Tis a bit perplexing about how such things work though; can I even have them to use? They are other people's stuff after all.
